Blood Pressure

If you fall in what is classed as either high or low blood pressure readings, then take extra care with your workouts, especially if increasing the heart rate, or working with heavy weights.

A reading around 120 / 80 (measured in mmHG) is considered a normal blood pressure reading.

You are considered to have borderline hypertension (High blood pressure) with a reading of 140 / 90.

You are moderate to high risk if you have blood pressure readings of 141 / 90 to 160 / 95.

Blood pressure reading higher than 160 / 95 is a high risk.

If your blood pressure is 140/90 or above, you should consult your doctor prior to starting any exercise program.

At the other end of the scale, low blood pressure (hypotension) is pressure that is so low that it cause a lack of oxygen to vital organs such as the brain due to the low flow of blood through the arteries and veins.

Low blood pressure levels are generally considered to be around 100/60, however some people may feel fine at this level or even 10 units lower.

Individuals with high blood pressure should avoid working with heavy weights, and those with low blood pressure should aim to spend extra time warming up the body to assist with blood flow.

If at anytime you feel unsure or unwell - always consult with your doctor.
