Cysts
Usually benign, cysts are encapsulated tumors found in almost every part of the body. Their tissue type depends normally on their location. Sebaceous cysts are slow growing tumors of the skin, filled with a fatty substance, which will feel firm to the touch and can grow to considerable size.
Although they are totally harmless, occasionally they can become infected especially along the hairline, and may need to be surgically removed. In other instances, the cyst may be located in an area where its size causes discomfort, this too can be a reason to have it removed.
Other cysts, e.g. ovarian cysts, breast cysts and bone cysts can produce pain, and in some instances can prove to be malignant. For this reason any lump or mass that has suddenly been felt or has started to give rise to pain should always be investigated, especially in the breast and testes. Early diagnosis will normally lead to a better chance of treatment and full recovery.
