Lung Cancer

Lung cancer arises in the epithelium of the lung tissue or bronchial network. It is strongly associated with cigarette smoking and/or exposure to industrial air pollutants especially Asbestos.

Diagnosis of lung cancer in its early stages is often difficult. X-rays help to define an area possible affected, and then endoscopic biopsies (sampling of the tissue with fibreoptic equipment inserted into the lungs) can help to identify the presence of cancer cells.

Treatment of lung cancer includes the surgical removal of the affected area of the lung or lobe if possible. Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy can be used instead of or as well depending on the extent and degree of the disease. Prognosis always depends on early discovery and can vary from patient to patient.

The Cancer information service (BACUP) telephone 0207 613 2121, or counseling 0207 696 9000. Giving up smoking is essential, help for this can be found by telephoning Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) on 0207 224 0743.
