Myringotomy

Myringotomy is a surgical procedure where an incision of the eardrum is made to create an artificial opening.

This may be needed to allow the drainage of infected fluid from the middle ear e.g. acute otitis, or a build up of fluid as in glue ear. In the condition glue ear, it is usual after drainage of that fluid to insert a device called a grommet, which acts as a drain until the condition resolves.

It is a common minor operation in children and normally has no side effects.
