Cataract
The loss of transparency of the lens in the eye causing reduced vision and a cloudy appearance of the lens is known as Cataracts. Cataracts can develop gradually with aging or can be formed as consequences of an underlying condition for example diabetes mellitus.
Cataracts are treated by surgically removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear synthetic lens made of plastic or silicone.
Cataract operations are very common and in most cases improvement in sight is achieved. However, over time the synthetic lens can also become cloudy and a second operation may become necessary at a later date.
