Dandruff
Dandruff is the every day word for Seborrheic dermatitis, which is seen as an itching condition of a dry or greasy scalp. The onset is usually gradual, and is normally limited to the scalp, but in some severe cases yellowish red scaly spots can affect the eyebrows, ears and area around the mouth and nose.
Treatment usually depends on the severity and the location. A tar-based shampoo used regularly has been shown to be helpful in controlling dandruff. It may be necessary to use a steroid based cream or lotion on severely affected of the face.
It is thought that a simple yeast type organism, which can live on the skin, is the cause of the problem. As it affects so many people it is an area where research by the cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies for 'the ideal solution' is an ongoing race.
